Tisha b’Av, From Brokenness to Wholeness, Sun., 8/3, 10 am – noon @ Mishkan Torah, Greenbelt.
This year, Oseh Shalom will be joining with Mishkan Torah, Columbia Jewish Congregation and Kol Halev in a joint service to commemorate the day. The service will be in person.
Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, marks the destruction of the First and Second Temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE, and the subsequent exile of the Jewish people. It’s a day of fasting and mourning and has become a time to remember other great calamities that have befallen the Jewish people.
The Book of Lamentations, (Eicha) which is read on Tish B’Av, recounts the devastation wrought with the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylonia. While it is a day of mourning, it is also a day to confront the dual challenges of hate and anti-Semitism we face as 21st century Jews. It is also a time to reflect on the resilience that has helped us meet those calamities and kept our people alive and flourishing for over 3,000 years.
Our commemoration will include a short service and the recitation of the Book of Lamentations. Join us at 10:00 am on Sunday August 3nd as we mourn the tragedies that have befallen us and celebrate the spirit of redemption for us and the world. The room will be dimmed, so bring a flashlight if you want to follow along.
Free Registration before 7/25 is required to attend for security purposes. Register Here.
