Scholar in residence: Dr. Marc Gopin: Compassionate Reasoning: Changing the Mind to Change the World

February 7, 2027
10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Dr. Marc Gopin will present his second Scholar in Residence talk on the how-to of changing ourselves and the world in hopes of a yearned for peace. Compassionate Reasoning: Changing the Mind to Change the World.

How can human beings change destructive patterns into visionary building of the future? Drawing from his book Compassionate Reasoning and decades of work in violent conflicts, Professor Marc Gopin will introduce a practical approach to transforming thought, emotion, relationships, and action. Compassionate Reasoning joins reflection, compassion, practical judgment, moral sentiment, and disciplined, emotionally regulated action. It helps people resist tribal thinking, understand opposing truths, confront wrongdoing without dehumanizing those involved, and build cooperation across profound differences. Combining Jewish wisdom, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and field experience in many zones of conflict, this talk offers hope: by changing how we reason and repeatedly practice, we can change ourselves—and change the world.
