Person A -- Moved from St. Petersburg home. Was studying there. Forced to move to Pale of Settlement. Has a friend in US.
Person B -- ##Yaakov's Story
It’s 1890 and young Yaakov is living in St. Petersburg, Russia. He recently graduated from dental school; enjoys his work and making new friends. Early one Spring morning, his door is kicked in and he finds himself standing in the street with other professionals, all Jewish, and surrounded by townspeople and police officers. With barely a few of his belongings he finds himself on a train to Odessa, in the Pale of Settlement. Other than the few colleagues on the train with him, he knows no one else.

[=Yaakov found a room to rent in Odessa. Exploring his new city, he began chatting with folks in Odessa. Some educated Jews felt persistent antisemitism prevented them from ever integrating into Russian society. Others felt joining forces with other trades and professions, particularly in the new areas of industrialization, would help everyone.

Yaakov feels it is best to keep his head down. The government continues to waver on Jewish rights. Leaving the Pale is risky and expensive. Yaakov’s Jewish identity will not be compromised. He now needs to weigh the risks of this fight for Jewish identity. Leaving the Pale is risky and expensive. But many have spoken of a Jewish state in Palestine, which was just being colonized. Staying in the Pale is safer and limiting. He could join The Bund, a general Jewish workers union that had formed. ##Rivke's Future
(color:red+white)[Rivke left her home and traveled to Palestine]
What happens to Rivke? Her children? Her grandchildren?
Consider her social circles, family life, professional identity, religious identity, cultural identity, and economic status.
(link-goto:"After you finish your discussion, click here to travel to this story's epilogue","PalEpi")Intro: It is 1890. Seventeen year old Rivke lives in a small village called Shereshev in the Pale of Settlement on the border between the Russian Empire and Poland. Rivke lives with her parents and 8 brothers and sisters in a small house in the village. Her father farms for their survival. Her mother takes care of the children and the home and does her best to keep a traditional Jewish home. Rivke, the oldest daughter, helps her mother with household chores and taking care of the younger children.
Yesterday, the third pogrom of the year came through Shereshev. The Shul was destroyed, yet again. The torah is in tatters. Five teenage boys were killed and dozens more were hurt. Rivke has a bad feeling about her future in Shereshev. She has been hearing stories of young Jews who have left their villages. Some are going to Palestine, the historical homeland of Jews. Others are going to America, where they are able to make new lives for themselves in the “land of the free.”
Decision One: Both options seem better to Rivke than staying here. She would be able to make a new life, safe from the violence from Cossacks. But how can she leave mama and papa? Would she ever see them again? What of her younger brothers and sisters? And how safe would this journey be, a young girl alone in the world?
Discuss among your group the risks and benefits of leaving the Pale: Does Rivke decide to
a. Stay in Sheveshev with her family
b. Leave for a better life elsewhere
Decision 2-a: Rivke decides to stay with her family in Shereshev. How can she leave mama alone with all those little kids? Leaving home is risky and expensive. She doesn’t have the money, and how could she be certain she’d be safe on such a journey? But staying is not without its own risks. Pogroms continue all over the region. There is scarcely enough food and money to keep the family going. These times are challenging.
Rivke has been hearing stories of Jews in her village and those nearby embracing some new ideas. Socialists and revolutionaries have been talking among villagers with new ideas of how people can live the world. These ideas seem exciting to Rivke. But do how do they reconcile with living a good Jewish life? What kinds of people are these Socialists who would work with people they’ve never known, people who aren’t their “own kind?” Should Rivke join the Socialist movement or keep her head down and live her life as Jews had done in her village for centuries?
Discuss among your group the risks and benefits of working with the wider society for a better life vs. living the life she knows. Does Rivke decide to:
i. Live the life she has always known, with her “own kind.”
ii. Join the new Socialist movement and work with the wider society to improve life for all people in and outside the Pale.
Dcision 2-b: Rivke decides to leave. The potential dangers of the journey far outweigh the real danger of staying in the Pale. Rivke has discussed this at length with mama and papa. They support her decision and agree that when Rivke gets settled, maybe she can send money home to help out, and maybe she can even bring some of her younger brothers and sisters to her new home. But where should Rivke go?
Rivke has heard of many people going to America to start a new life. This seems scary, but also very exciting. Imagine the possibilities! A new place in a new world, where people are free to do and be whatever they want! A place where Rivke can reinvent herself and be anybody!
Rivke has also been hearing about a guy named Theodore Herzl. He has been spreading ideas around the Pale about making a new homeland in Palestine, the ancestral homeland of Jews.
This seems appealing to Rivke too. If she is going to leave everything and everyone she knows, at least she could do it with other Jews. A new life but more familiar and comforting.
Discuss among your group where Rivke should decide to go:
iii. Palestine. A new life but more familiar, with the kinds of people she knows.
iv. America. A new life with new people.
Decision 3-a-i: Rivke stays in her home in Shereshev with her family. She lives a good Jewish life among the friends and family she has always known. Discuss with your group the possible outcomes for Rivke and her family in future generations. What happens to Rivke? Her children? Her grandchildren?
Decision 3-a-ii: Rivke stays in her home in Shereshev with her family. She becomes involved with the new Socialist movement with other young people from neighboring villages. Discuss with your group the outcomes for Rivke and her family in future generations. What happens to Rivke? Her children? Her grandchildren?
Decision 3-a-iii: Rivke leaves her home with a group of other young adults and teens from nearby villages and travels with the group to Palestine. There she is faced with a new set of decisions. Does she settle in Palestine with her group and try to recreate the kind of life she lived in the Pale of Settlement? Or does she become a founding member of a new “Kibbutz,” a new socialist communal movement in Palestine, where people live communally. In the kibbutz, all wealth will be shared, but in turn, members will be provided with food, clothing, shelter, and all the things they need to live.
Discuss among your group how Rivke will decide to live in Palestine:
● Settle in a village in Palestine and try to recreate the kind of life she lived in Europe.
Discuss the possible outcomes for Rivke and her family in future generations. What
happens to Rivke? Her children? Her grandchildren?
● Become a founding member of a new Kibbutz. Discuss the possible outcomes for Rivke and her family in future generations. What happens to Rivke? Her children? Her
grandchildren?
Decision 3-b-iv: Rivke leaves her home and family in Shereshev and travels alone to America.
There she is faced with a new set of decisions. Does she stay in lower Manhattan in NY and start over, among other Jews from the Pale of Settlement and make a life for themselves among her own kind? Or does she go somewhere new and start over among strangers and different people from those she has always known.
Discuss among your group where Rivke will decide to go in America:
● Stay in lower Manhattan among other Jews from the Pale of Settlement. Discuss the
possible outcomes for Rivke and her family in future generations. What happens to
Rivke? Her children? Her grandchildren?
● Go somewhere new, perhaps Baltimore, Chicago, Boston. There will be Jews there but not in the same concentration as in NY. Discuss the possible outcomes for Rivke and her family in future generations. What happens to Rivke? Her children? Her
grandchildren?
Decision 3-a-iiv-epilogue: It is the year 2035. Rivke’s great-great-great granddaughter
Rebecca is a 30 year old assimilated Jew living in Howard County, Maryland. Anti-semitism has been on the rise in the United States for a few decades now and things are suddenly not seeming safe for Rebecca and her family. Rebecca must make a decision - should she stay where she grew up, with her family and friends, or should she leave the familiarity of her home and find a place in the world where she can live as a Jew without the threat of violence?Intro: It’s 1890 and young Yaakov is living in St. Petersburg, Russia. b. Not be an isolationist and figure out a way of integrating into the wider society
Level 2a: Yaakov’s Jewish identity will not be compromised. He now needs to weigh the risks of this fight for Jewish identity. Leaving the Pale is risky and expensive. Staying in the Pale is safer and limiting. Have the group weigh the pros and cons of leaving or staying and choose if Yaakov should
